Sad day here.As I was driving the car engine started vibrating and the engine light came on and the car engine stopped suddenly. Going to my MB dealer to have service tec test drive and experience shifting issues, and may stop by sales to see what lease deals are available, then next door to Lexus. Don't want a Lexus but damned if seeing my neighbours 2008 RX350 with 159,000 miles look and run as flawlessly as the day I saw him bring it home. My CPO Volvo s60 gave me no serious worries, it was just boring. Sad to say, but my love affair with the 3 pointed star has taken a serious kick in the family jewels. Mercedes CPO only lends one year, so price wise my only realistic non budget busting option would be to lease. Not to mention a broken sunroof wind deflector, broken door pull, wonky Harmon Kardon sound, and some serious buyers remorse. I have rough downshifts from 2nd to 1st gear, a strange noise that sounds eerily of a alternator or compressor failure, and balance shaft issues looming as a possibility. Seems like they may have been a better bet. I was of course prepared for the higher maintenance costs, and the likelihood of some reliability issues (it is, after all, a modern German luxury car) but to have to worry about putting 8-10k into repairs makes no economic sense, regardless of how much I enjoy the car. Having had many older Benz cars, I thought buying a low mileage dealer serviced car would be a safe bet. I have about 6 months left of CPO warranty covering mainly the drivetrain and a/c. ![]() While I love the vault solid feel my MB has, after 5 months I am seriously doubting the economical sense it makes to keep it. ![]() I'm afraid to say I think I may have made a big mistake in buying my 2006 c230. I had mine flashed and it drives like a totally different car with very smooth, almost CVT-like shifts. The 722.9 7GTRONIC transmission had a lot of complaints about "odd" shifting, and the latest code is much, much better. Also, you might have the dealer flash the TCU with the latest firmware. Still, the first DIY with the tool investment is still less than the dealer's price, then after that (you really should do it every 39K miles) the parts will be around $100. If you are mechanically inclined, you can DIY, but you will need some special tools. The dealer will charge around $400 for it, but an indy should be less. First, unless you can find that it was done around 39K miles as it should have been, get the transmission serviced. Of course the transmission problem has nothing to do with the balance shaft issue. It should last 300K miles or more, so "premature" is anything earlier - 30K miles (like my CLK550) or 230K miles. It just means that the balance shaft/timing gear is made from a forged alloy material that will fail prematurely. As I have posted in other threads, just because your engine is in the "range" doesn't mean it's going to die. If you MIL is not illuminated, then you aren't having balance shaft issues. Sorry, wdbrf52h56f729170 has M272 engine #99389, which is within the affected range. Guess they don't make em like they use to! ![]() This was truly an impulse buy, as I normally do much more research before buying. However, if I am facing possible major engine repairs plus transmission issues, I will trade her in while she's still under warranty. The transmission is really annoying, it takes away from an otherwise enjoyable car. They gave the car a clean bill of health, but I suspect it was never road tested or started cold (this was a paid service, approx $250.00). I took it to my local MB dealer and had a full health check done, noting the transmission issues and also a low end noise in the engine when it first starts. The car had just had a full service at MB of Fairfax, VA. Shortly after buying, I noticed the transmission seems to shift rough when coming to a stop, it seems to really bog the engine down (a friend who drove the car thought I had left the parking brake on). I bought my black on black 2006 C230 in April, paying handsomely for the low mileage (59k), and the included one year warranty. I'm pretty concerned that I may have made a mistake in my purchase. Hello all! Hopefully not being rude, but would be ever so grateful if someone with access could check my vin to see if my 2006 c230 is in the affected range.
